RM Sotheby’s will auction stunning East Texas Gene Ponder Collection

By

The RM Sotheby’s team will set up in the outskirts of Marshall in East Texas September 22-24 to offer the Gene Ponder Collection of over 140 cars, motorcycles, and boats, as well as an enviable and expansive selection of automobilia.

The collection sits on an immaculate estate comprised of state-of-the-art garages and buildings dotted across perfectly manicured grounds. Housed within is the collection, an eclectic assemblage of purebreds.

A highlight of the collection is a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster finished in Dark Red over Cognac leather with matching soft and hard tops. Restored by Paul Russell and Company, the 300 SL retains its numbers-matching engine, gearbox, steering box, front spindles, rear axle, and original hardtop. Fitted with Rudge wheels, factory-type lap belts, Europa Mexico radio, Talbot mirror, and matching luggage, this example was toured regularly throughout the United States by Gene Ponder.

A Rosso Rubino over beige leather 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC by Pininfarina is desirably fitted with a correct-type Ferrari air conditioning system and polished Borrani wire wheels, and retains its original body and numbers-matching V-12 engine. Prior to becoming part of Ponders collection, this Ferrari was maintained by the same owner for 30 years.

One of only 14 such coupes believed to have been built, of which few survive, the collection’s 1935 MG PB Airline Coupe by Carbodies is a rare and remarkable MG built to the streamlined design of H.W. Allingham. It is one of 526 PB chassis constructed in total and features the final and most refined iteration of the classic overhead-valve crossflow Midget engine. Beautifully restored under prior ownership with a subtle two-tone red-over-red exterior/interior, this example boasts details such as Borrani wire wheels and an MG “Midge” radiator mascot.

Joining those three lots is a number of hand-crafted replicas and tributes to all-but-unobtainable European sports cars seldom seen outside of museums, plus automobilia ranging from classic signage, jukeboxes, fuel pumps, neon signs, wall art, and much more.
