Portland, OR — Last Saturday’s 19th Kastner Cup vintage race at Portland International Raceway — the first without its co-founder and namesake who passed away in April – was a fitting tribute to the late R.W. “Kas” Kastner.
This year’s Cup, with presenting sponsor Moss Motors, was awarded to Jeff Quick as part of SVRA’s Portland SpeedTour weekend. The event also featured a Kastner Cup Reunion race on Sunday.
Quick’s 1967 TR4-A took command of the 1.967-mile Portland International Raceway to show what a finely tuned Triumph can do on a respectful road course. He was also awarded the Peggy Kastner Performance Award in the TR4 and TR4A Class.
The late Kastner based his selection of each year’s Cup winner on looking for “the racer who drove out of his class,” to find a driver who exceeded his car’s limits. With Kastner’s passing, event co-founder Joseph Alexander stepped in as Grand Marshal, staying true to the selection process to choose Quick’s race performance.
The Kastner Cup race has been hosted at a variety of tracks including Watkins Glen International, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Miller Motorsports, Heartland Motorsports Park, Road America, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Sonoma Raceway, Eagle Canyon Raceway, Summit Point Raceway, Blackhawk Farms Raceway and Pitt Race Complex.
Kastner influenced the racing success of Triumph sports cars from the late 1950s through 1970 and beyond. To this day, his series of Competition Preparation Manuals are a must-read for competitors in Triumph sports cars. Later in his career, Kastner directed the Nissan IMSA GTP team that won the manufacturers’ championship three years in a row and the drivers’ championship four years in a row.
Joining Moss Motors as event sponsors are the Vintage Triumph Register, Triumph Wedge Owner’s Association, and Huffaker Motorsports. In kind sponsors are Classic Motor Films, Steve Belfer Creative, and North American Triumphs.
