Jacksonville, FL – With a story about the 1991 Brumos Porsche 911 (964) Turbo that won the IMSA SuperCar Championship gracing the cover of the Nov/Dec 2020 Vintage Motorsport issue, we were thrilled that the newest edition of The Brumos Collection’s “Inside the 59” video series features the profound impact of the DOHC engine on high performance motor development, shown through three cars from the collection.

Hosted by Brumos Collection Executive Director Brandon Starks with expert insight from Director Don Leatherwood and Assistant Manager Aaron Israel, the series’ fourth episode examines the evolution of the DOHC engine by taking an up-close look at three eras in motorsports competition:
1914 Peugeot L45
One of the first cars that featured DOHC technology, the Peugeot L45 was engineered by three drivers and a draftsman whose ideas were so radical, they were dubbed “The Charlatans” by other Peugeot engineers. This foursome created a technology so revolutionary, it’s still used today.
1930 Miller Sampson Special
As the Peugeot L45 signified what was important about “The Charlatans” and their innovations, this Sampson Special exemplifies legendary race car designer and builder Harry Miller’s creativity and innovation – noteworthy for DOHC-powered race cars winning the Indianapolis 500 a total of 17 times between 1922 and 1938.
1963 Meskowski Dirt Champ Car
Taking cues from his employer Harry Miller, engine builder Fred Offenhauser developed a dominant 4-cylinder motor that powered this Sprint car named in honor of the legendary racer’s crew chief and engineer Wally Meskowski. The dirt racer earned a place in motorsports lore when driver A.J. Foyt, whose race car did not show up, opted to drive it on the pavement in the Milwaukee Mile.
