Does that 1991 Brumos Porsche 964 Turbo on the cover ring a bell? It was the car that relaunched Brumos back onto center stage after their long period of inactivity following the death of Peter Gregg. IMSA was responding to a new wave of high-performance road cars and Bridgestone wanted to get on board as the spec tire for IMSA’s new SuperCar Series. Besides Porsche, this series featured the Lotus Espirit Turbo, Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, Corvette, Dodge Stealth and a complete surprise to all, the Consulier GTP. In each issue we do a My Favorite Race feature with a retired pro driver. We’ve done more than 85 of them so far, and this time around its Mr. Nice Guy, Kyle Petty, talking about racing a Pontiac in the 1995 Miller Genuine Draft 500 on the 1-mile Dover International Speedway.
If you’ve never been to the Le Mans 24 Hour race, put it on your bucket list because it is one of the world’s great motor races — unlike any other. The fact that it’s in France means it will certainly be different, so here writer Janos Wimpffen looks at what goes on around the race, rather than the race itself. It’s a spectacle like no other, and one of the best places ever to see famous cars, both quirky modern, ancient and in between. And the racing’s not bad either.
Ferrari enthusiasts may or may not know of Ferrari’s brief history regarding the Indy 500. The only Ferrari ever to complete a lap in the 500 was a 375 model driven by Alberto Ascari in 1952, but writer Jeff Allison explores “What If Ferrari Raced in Indycar and the Indy 500?” Because in 1985 and ’86, Enzo Ferrari seriously looked into that possibility with the Ferrari 637, the “500” his unfulfilled dream. What a story this is, told in great detail.
And speaking of Indianapolis, we uncover a driver you’ve probably never heard of who led the first laps of the very first “500″ in 1911 and won more races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway than anyone. That driver was Johnny Aitken. His racing career was brief but impressive. The 1918 flu pandemic took him at age 33. His record is little known outside of Indy 500 fanatics.

Vintage Motorsport also features a great Vintage Shop in every issue, and this time we visit Rick Duman’s Turn 4 Restorations in Brownsburg, Indiana, where Indy cars are a specialty. The lineup of cars in this shop is always impressive, many of which we hope to see at next year’s May 29 Legends Day at IMS.
We were also more than pleased to cover recent vintage races that included the Driver Appreciation Weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca that took the place of what would have been Monterey Week’s races.
And HSR joined up with the good folks at VSCDA to share entries for the Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival at Road America and VRG combined with VSCCA to ensure that the Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival 38 would go off without a hitch. And it did. Great racing and beautiful cars at speed!
