VSCDA Ready to Move From Plans to Action for June 19-21 Blackhawk Classic

South Beloit, IL — The Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association is living out the old adage “where there’s a will, there’s a way” as it fulfills both aspects of the phrase for the June 19-21 Blackhawk Classic 28 at Blackhawk Farms Raceway.

After having to cancel its annual Drivers School and Spring Brake at Gingerman weekend — one-third of a 2020 on-track schedule — the club started hoping and planning that the popular Blackhawk event might be allowed to proceed on its usual Father’s Day weekend.

“We have worked with our tracks and public health experts — including our own racing epidemiologist Dr. Sharon Frey — to prepare a comprehensive operating plan,” VSCDA president Alex Rorke said. “Our goal was to meet or exceed the health and safety standards put forth by the CDC and the regulatory authorities where we race. We also incorporated best practices from the Vintage Motorsports Council, SCCA, SVRA and other racing groups into our approach.”

Among the most notable changes are taking temperature checks of drivers upon arrival at the track, drivers’ meetings conducted over the public address system and on FM frequencies, discontinuing the use of helmet stickers, as well as banning cash transactions and large gatherings, including for the traditional evening social events and dinners. Driver pre-registration closed at noon Wednesday (June 17).

Still, to say that VSCDA members are ready to race is an understatement.

Event co-chairs Ron Soave and Jeff Porasik recently finalized a three-day schedule that includes two Enduro races (closed wheel on Saturday; open wheel on Sunday) sponsored by Porasik & Yde Wealth Management of Racine to benefit the Disabled American Veterans organization. Another specialty contest, the Dad’s Day Handicap Scramble, is back at 3 p.m. Sunday.

You’ll find photos from Bill Nesius, along with coverage of the event, in the July/August issue of Vintage Motorsport magazine, scheduled to go to the printer early next week.
