As the NTT IndyCar Series REV Group Grand Prix gets underway today (June 17) at Road America, Vintage Indy race cars will be on hand to show fans the historic forerunners to today’s machinery. The weekend event is a tribute to first responders, and is open to spectators.
As a bonus, the June 18 Elkhart Lake Welcome Party at Siebkens Resort is in partnership with the George4 Foundation, headed by George Steinbrenner IV of Steinbrenner Racing, to benefit Racing for Kids.
Thankfully, Blackhawk Farms Raceway is unaffected by a massive fire that started Monday at the nearby Rockton, Illinois Chemtool plant — so the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association’s June 18-20 Blackhawk Classic is good to go.
Event organizer Ron Soave tells us the winds have been and continue to be favorable to the racetrack, and that air quality isn’t affected. The fire is considered under control although hot spots remain at the plant.
Registration closed Tuesday; the weekend schedule includes the Formula Vee race being run as a tribute to VSCDA member Frank Newton who passed away May 29.
ANd Corvette faithful will gather at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Friday and Saturday for this year’s Bloomington Gold.
